“I feel like we finally did what was right for our kid.”

We believe that kids’ lives can get better in a supportive community outside of school. The staff at Liberty SDLC will help teens and their families to transition into a new life on their own terms and for their own purposes.

Who is it for?

Kids of all backgrounds who have:

  • gotten straight A’s in school, but felt bored or unchallenged.
  • had learning differences that their schools were not able to fully address.
  • wanted a more flexible learning environment.
  • had passions they wanted to pursue but felt that school took up too much of their time.
  • felt lost within the social scene at school or were bullied.
  • found the structure and values of traditional school confining.
  • been long-standing homeschooling teens who wanted daily peer interaction.

The Joining Process

  1. Talk with Troy—he will answer your initial questions about Liberty SDLC and find a time for an in-person chat. Feel free to be in touch even if you are not quite sure yet. If we are not the best fit, our staff can help direct you to educational options that better suit your family’s needs.
  2. Find a time to visit—after the initial conversation, we’ll invite him/her to spend a day at Liberty, offering a chance to meet the other members and staff and to get a sense of how it all works.
  3. Fill out our application—if your family and child feel that Liberty is a good fit, the next step is to reach out to Troy and set up a time to meet and learn more about Liberty. Troy will help you through the application process after it is established Liberty is right for your child. (The application is a fillable pdf. Click the link to open the document, and then you can put your cursor in the blanks to fill it out. When you’re finished, save it and email it to troy@libertysdlc.com.)
  4. Commit —if space is available and we also feel Liberty is a good fit, we will offer you a membership spot and send you the electronic Enrollment Forms to complete.

When kids join Liberty, the aim is to help them create lives and educational experiences they can be excited about. Members are matched with a staff mentor who helps them to settle in at Liberty and find opportunities to learn and grow based on their interests and goals.

“I never teach my pupils.
I only provide the conditions in which they can learn.”
~ Albert Einstein
